Bounding Box Software – aka game developer Mike Voeller – has developed Materialize, a free tool that converts photographs into PBR materials. You can then use these in game engines, for example. It therefore appears to be an alternative to programs such as B2M from (Adobe-)Allegorithmic.
Materialize can..
- Diffuse Maps into Height, Metallic, Smoothness
- Height Maps into Normal
- Height + Diffuse Maps into Normal
- Normal Maps into Edge, Occlusion
- Normal + Height Maps into Occlusion
- and Normal Maps into Height Maps
…convert. With the help of sliders for converting the individual maps and the PBR material, finer adjustments can also be made. In addition, you can automatically create seamless textures and then export them in BMP, JPG, PNG, TGA and TIFF format.

The tool is available for Windows free of charge under the GNU General Public License v3 here and can be used for commercial projects. You can find all further information and additional shader packs for Unity and Unreal on the homepage,
