For two and a half years, the teams worked on the film with more than 1,150 VFX shots. For “Dumbo”, overall VFX Supervisor Richard Stammers worked with MPC, Rodeo FX, Framestore, Rise Visual Effects and other studios, among others. The film was shot mainly at Pinewood and Cardington studios. MPC now presents several interesting shots in which the studio was involved: The work varied greatly – from set extensions, character building and animation to second-unit footage.
MPC – Work on Dumbo
Right from the start, MPC designed concept art and designs for the world of Dumbo together with Tim Burton. Based on this, MPC’s VFX artists then created various CG characters with different animation cycles. The Character team worked on the film’s main characters for more than a year in order to achieve the right look.
In research & development, MPC also developed a simulation setup with which the artists could simulate individual folds of the elephants in detail. This made it possible in particular to depict the elephants’ movements more realistically. For the shown bath scene with Dumbo, the team used a combination of CG and practical foam, which MPC recorded for it in its own studio.
