A prelude to VIEW Conference 2020
The 21st VIEW Conference opened its preVIEW programme with an interview featuring ILM animation director Hal Hickel. Before & Afters editor Ian Failes guided the discussion through the virtual-production methods used on The Mandalorian, including the prospect of bringing sophisticated visual effects to television productions with a wider range of budgets.
Hal Hickel’s animation work
Hickel joined ILM in 1996 and worked on The Lost World: Jurassic Park. He later animated characters for Star Wars: Episode I, with further credits including Rogue One, Pacific Rim and Iron Man. His work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest received Academy Award and BAFTA recognition.
Historical event details
The free preVIEW session was scheduled for 27 June 2020 at 23:30 Central European Time, ahead of the main VIEW Conference programme that October. Both dates are retained here as historical context and are no longer upcoming.
Teams evaluating virtual-production methods should test the current toolchain, stage configuration and capture workflow before production use.
