Broader production coverage

The third edition of the VES Handbook incorporated techniques, standards and workflows that had developed since the second edition. Fifty-six additional industry specialists contributed material spanning augmented and virtual reality, colour management, VFX editorial and interactive games.

Compositing, capture and cameras

Revised sections covered 2.5D and 3D compositing, Z-depth workflows and set extensions. New capture material addressed lidar, photogrammetry and prop scanning, while digital cinematography expanded into HDR and lens metadata.

Realtime and virtual production

The edition added material on realtime rendering, materials, shaders, geometry instancing, lens mapping, camera tracking, technical visualisation and virtual production. Other updates addressed native stereo, VFX handoffs, editorial pulls and the use of AR and VR across production stages.

Historical availability

The handbook was offered for preorder in digital, hardback and paperback editions. Prices quoted in 2020 are not current. Readers should confirm the available edition and errata before treating any technical recommendation as present-day practice.
