Second-year 3D student Toivo Huhtaniska published a detailed breakdown of his Outskirts Environment project, covering ZBrush modelling, Substance texturing and lighting for a hand-built scene.

The walkthrough addressed blockout and modularity, architectural detailing, adding imperfection, materials and textures, vegetation, Unreal Engine techniques, lighting and post-processing.

Huhtaniska said that three months of full-time work on the project taught him more than the preceding three years combined. The breakdown remains a useful historical study of deliberate environment-building practice, although specific software interfaces may have changed.
