Maxon presented Cinema 4D R23 during the 2020 3D and Motion Design Show and IBC Showcase. The release improved animation and UV workflows, expanded character-animation tools and integrated Magic Bullet Looks. Pipeline additions included Python 3, USD import and export, and FBX and OBJ workflow updates.

Availability

Cinema 4D R23 was scheduled for 9 September 2020 for subscribers and as an upgrade for perpetual-licence holders. This is historical availability information.

Character Animation

New tools included Character Solver and Delta Mush workflows, a Pose Manager, and Toon and Face rigs.

UV Workflows

UV editing tools previously introduced for Cinema 4D S22 subscribers became available to perpetual-licence users. Maxon also added tools aimed at UV workflows for hard-surface modelling.

Magic Bullet Looks

Magic Bullet Looks integration brought more than 200 preset film looks, LUT import and controls for colour correction, film grain and chromatic aberration into Cinema 4D. The integration followed the combination of Red Giant and Maxon described in our earlier report.

Scene Nodes

The initial Scene Nodes system exposed part of Cinema 4D’s core engine for procedural modelling and handling large object sets. Animation workflow improvements covered keyframing and filters for the Timeline and Attribute Manager.

Production teams should test plug-in compatibility, interchange formats and representative scenes before upgrading.

Maxon published the complete feature list on its Cinema 4D R23 page.
