In brief: FMX – Film & Media Exchange announced its return to an in-person format in Stuttgart for 2022 after the 2021 conference had been held entirely online.
Dates and format: The on-site programme was scheduled for 3–5 May 2022 at Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart. On 6 May, FMX planned to switch to a virtual format with a globally accessible online programme.
Programme chair: Under the theme “Changing the Game,” FMX appointed director and producer Hasraf “HaZ” Dulull as its first programme chair. Digital Production had previously interviewed Dulull for issue 05:2021 about his path from games to filmmaking, the independent science-fiction features The Beyond and Origin Unknown, his work on Disney’s Fast Layne, and his Unreal Engine pipeline.
As programme chair, Dulull was to contribute ideas and work with the FMX team on the conference programme.
Changing the Game: The theme reflected how virtual production, real-time technology and remote workflows were enabling more flexible collaboration. Accelerated by the global pandemic, productions were increasingly adopting iterative real-time processes in place of strictly linear workflows. FMX 2022 planned to highlight people and projects advancing and democratising media production.
