In brief: Sony expanded its CineAlta digital-cinema camera line with VENICE 2, introducing a newly developed 8.6K full-frame image sensor.
Features: VENICE 2 could use either the new 8.6K full-frame sensor or the original VENICE 6K sensor. Sony described the body as smaller and lighter than the first VENICE and added internal 16-bit X-OCN recording without the external AXS-R7 recorder. The company specified 16 stops of dynamic range.
The design retained VENICE colour processing, dual base ISO, integrated eight-stage ND filters and the core body architecture. Interchangeable sensor blocks between VENICE and VENICE 2 were intended to provide production flexibility.
Sony head of media solutions Hiroshi Kajita said feedback from cinematographers and production companies informed the smaller body and internal recording. He cited operation on drones, Steadicam systems, gimbals and underwater housings.
Cinematographer Rob Hardy described using the 8.6K sensor with anamorphic lenses and higher ISO settings for faster low-light shooting. His comments were supplied as a product testimonial.
