In brief: Cesium released the first stable version of Cesium for O3DE, the Open 3D Engine. The company had released its open-source Unreal Engine plugin in March 2021 and planned support for additional engines.
What is O3DE? O3DE succeeded Amazon Lumberyard and was developed with the Linux Foundation. Like Lumberyard, it was open source under the Apache 2.0 licence. Digital Production’s DP 05:2021 included a broader engine survey.
Cesium for O3DE features:
- A scale-accurate WGS84 globe. WGS84 is the global reference system used by GPS and other geospatial workflows.
- A 3D Tiles engine for streaming imagery, 3D cities and photogrammetry through the cloud, a private network or local storage.
- O3DE Script Canvas integration for visual scripting.
- Cesium ion integration for curated terrain, imagery, buildings, photogrammetry and 3D tiling pipelines.
