In brief: Glassbox Technologies released DragonFly 3.0. The company developed software for virtual production, and DragonFly provided a cross-platform virtual-camera system.
Design goal: Glassbox CEO Norman Wang said version 3.0 was intended to simplify time-consuming tasks and make operation feel closer to working with a physical camera. That remained a vendor claim.
New functions in version 3.0:
- Camera and lens simulation designed to resemble physical-camera operation more closely.
- Unreal Engine viewport-rendering integration tailored to DragonFly’s pipeline.
- Production-style preview controls for lens distortion, anamorphic optics, shutter speed, ND strength and frame rate.
- A new editor window for profiles and image resolution, with live colour-space output.
- Simulcam for on-set visualisation.
- Review-mode editing for changing start frames, revising camera settings and switching camera or lens types after capture.
- Viewport recording that produced final MP4 files without a separate Unreal render.
- Simplified file management with revised automatic take naming and support for larger datasets.
Availability: Glassbox published the DragonFly 3.0 announcement. A free 30-day trial was offered, alongside annual subscriptions, perpetual licences on request and floating licences. Test tracking, lens metadata, colour handling and recording output on the intended stage before production use.
