For those who don’t know the tool: Autodesk Maya is a DCC for modeling, rigging, animation, FX, USD and rendering. MotionMaker sits in the Animation Editor, feeding previs, crowds and character blocking before rigs, layers, retargeting and Arnold renders take over.
Maya gets the AI work where artists live
The current Maya update is more interesting as a DCC update than as another AI press-cycle snack. The centre of gravity is MotionMaker, the AI-assisted animation system now moving from supplied motion models toward user-trained character models. That matters in Maya because the result stays inside the animation toolset, where artists can still inspect keys, layers, rigs and retargeting instead of praying to a black-box export.
Maya remains the production container here. The release line around it also includes Smart Bevel work, Sequencer updates, Skin Tools, USD asset workflows, LookdevX changes, Bifrost updates, Arnold integration and Flow-connected features. MotionMaker gets the flashier AI story, but the practical question is whether it behaves like part of the DCC rather than a separate toy with better adjectives.

Bring your own motion data
The main MotionMaker change is “Bring Your Own Data”. The feature lets teams train custom MotionMaker models from their own motion-capture or keyframe animation data, then use those trained models for generation inside Maya. Training is described as “local to the user’s machine”. That keeps the workflow closer to studio data, house style and internal animation libraries instead of only relying on bundled movement models.
The setup is not a casual drag-and-drop library dump. Source animation has to be prepared against a standard character definition, and frame ranges need tags for the relevant action styles. A walk, a jump or another behaviour is not magically understood because the file name looked convincing. Someone still has to organize, retarget and label the data. Terrible news for chaos folders, excellent news for repeatable pipeline work.
A trained model can then be used in MotionMaker like the supplied models. It can also be rebuilt after major changes to the source data or to the character receiving the generated animation. That gives studios a way to keep models aligned with revised rigs or improved motion libraries, assuming the data preparation survives contact with actual production schedules.
The marketing claim is that custom MotionMaker models can produce more individual and consistent character motion than readymade models or stock animation clips. Treat that as a claim until it has been tested on real shots, with real rigs, real scale and real supervisor notes. Production has a proud history of turning “in seconds” into “after tomorrows lunch, maybe”.

What MotionMaker generates
MotionMaker is a motion-generation system inside Maya. It uses machine learning trained on motion data, plus user input about a character’s current position and trajectory, to predict the next pose. Repeating that process produces a generated animation sequence. The tool is positioned around higher-level controls such as paths, key targets and action styles rather than hand-setting every pose from scratch.
The important distinction is that MotionMaker generates motion rather than simply blending existing motion clips. It does not remove the animator from the shot. It produces a foundation. The generated result is baked into Maya keyframes, so the usual animation tools can edit it after generation. That is the correct level of drama for an AI animation tool: useful keys, not a tiny oracle.
Generated motion can exist on a separate animation layer from hand-keyed work. Artists can add animation layers on top, regenerate the motion layer and preserve manual work. MotionMaker can also continue from hand-keyed animation, so a sequence can mix authored sections and generated sections. That makes it more useful for blocking, traversal, background characters and locomotion cleanup than for replacing performance animation.

Retargeting is still the hinge
MotionMaker generates animation on standard characters. The initial release included standard male biped, female biped and canine characters. Those characters include HumanIK characterization for retargeting, and generated motion can be transferred to other characters. If a studio does not use HumanIK, another retargeting tool can move the animation from the standard character to the production rig.
That retargeting step is where the feature becomes either useful or annoying. A generated clip on a standard character is not the same as approved animation on a show rig. Scale, proportions, foot contact, limb offsets, controls, deformation and performance intent still matter. The more eccentric the rig, the less charming any “one click” phrase becomes.
Horses join the motion set
Maya 2027 added horse motion generation to MotionMaker. The documented standard equine character is named adsk_equine. It can be created in the MotionMaker Editor, used to generate motion and imported into a Maya scene. The equine character supports configuration options for type, level of detail and variant selection. It includes a western_horse action style, and motion generation uses a trained model named default. That is the verified scope. It is not a general creature animation engine for every quadruped, alien pet or production horse with emotionally complex knees.
A command surface exists
Maya also documents a motionMaker utility command. The command is undoable, not queryable and not editable. Its flags include adding a character, adding an action style, adding a generator, adding a path locator, generating animation, exporting a character definition, exporting training data, returning registration information and resetting registration.
That command surface does not automatically mean a complete automation story is solved. It does give technical users something concrete to inspect when they test repeatability, batch setup, scene hygiene and resource registration. For TDs, the existence of exportTrainingData and exportCharacterDefinition is more interesting than another paragraph about creativity being transformed.
Maya around MotionMaker
The wider Maya 2027 feature set keeps the update from becoming a single-feature release. Smart Bevel adds a new modeling system for cleaner bevels, especially after Boolean-style workflows. Sequencer gets interface and workflow updates for shot editing, organization, grouping and playblast output. Skin Tools bring an integrated layer-based skinning workflow derived from ngSkinTools.

USD for Maya adds asset build workflows through Component Creator and Variant Manager. OpenUSD remains one of the main places where Maya has to play nicely with multi-DCC pipelines, so asset structure and variant management are not decorative features. They are how large teams avoid turning scene handoff into archaeology.

Flow, assistants and the new Autodesk stack
Maya also connects to Flow Studio, the cloud-based AI 3D toolset in Autodesk’s wider media and entertainment stack. Flow Studio can generate export elements such as motion-capture data, camera tracking, alpha masks, clean plates and character passes for use in 3D tools. In Maya 2027, a Flow Studio Launcher button opens the service directly.
Autodesk Assistant arrives in Maya 2027 as a Tech Preview. It uses natural-language interaction to help users find feature and workflow information inside the product. In practice, that is only useful if it returns precise documentation-level answers instead of cheery mush. Artists already have search engines for cheery mush.
Together, MotionMaker, Flow Studio and Assistant show where Maya is headed: AI features wrapped around existing production tasks, with different levels of locality, editability and trust. MotionMaker is the most concrete of the set for animators because it outputs keyframes in the DCC. That gives it a clearer inspection path than generated assets or generated advice.
Pricing and availability
MotionMaker was introduced with Maya 2026.1 on 4 June 2025 and was included at no extra charge in that release. It is available from Windows, Animation Editor, MotionMaker Editor. Maya Creative also receives corresponding Maya Creative updates, and Maya Creative is only available through Autodesk Flex as a pay-as-you-go product. US pricing: $255/month or $2,010/year for full Maya, $330/year for Maya Indie where eligibility rules apply, and Maya Creative from $3/day with a $99/year minimum.
Before using MotionMaker, Bring Your Own Data, horse generation or any wider Maya update in production, test the tool on representative rigs, shot lengths, retargeting setups, naming conventions, cache policies and review workflows.
