Rebelle 8.3 Adds EXR Heightmap Export

Rebelle 8.3 adds brush colour jitter, interactive selection controls, smoother gradients and Pro-only 16-bit EXR impasto heightmaps.
A painterly portrait of a young woman with wavy brown hair, a white collar, and a dark jacket, rendered in layered brushstrokes and warm earthy tones. The composition is tightly cropped against a softly textured background, giving the image a rich, atmospheric, hand-painted quality.

Social Media: Rebelle 8.3 gives brushes controlled chaos, selections rougher edges and impasto a 16-bit EXR ticket into 3D.

For those who don’t know the tool: Rebelle 8 is Escape Motions‘ standalone natural-media painting application for concept art, illustration, texture authoring and matte-painting elements. Rebelle Pro provides advanced PSD exchange, a plug-in connection to Adobe Photoshop, and scripting through Motion IO.

Escape Motions released Rebelle 8.3 on 30 July 2026 as a free update for existing Rebelle 8 users. The release concentrates on brush variation, selection handling, impasto interchange, asset management and smaller interface changes rather than introducing a replacement painting engine.

Several additions expose new artist controls, while others modify processing without adding another slider to the interface. Quick Fill reduces tool switching. Rough Feather adds a different selection-edge treatment. Color Jitter changes how texture-brush colour varies during rendering. Gradient Fill, meanwhile, gains automatic noise behind the scenes.

The published 8.3 release notes also contain fixes for selections, layer operations, fluid simulation, PSD export, time-lapse colour handling, shortcuts, tablet layouts and Motion IO commands. For production use, those less photogenic repairs may prove as consequential as the headline features.

Controlled variation for texture brushes

Color Jitter appears in Brush Creator under Texture Brushes, Paint and Rendering. Artists can vary hue, saturation and brightness per bristle, per stamp or per stroke, depending on the selected painting tool.

Per-bristle variation assigns differences within the brush footprint. Per-stamp variation changes successive texture impressions. Per-stroke variation holds a variation across a complete stroke before choosing another value for the next one. These modes address different forms of repetition rather than merely presenting three names for the same random-number control.

Escape Motions limits Color Noise per Bristle and per Stamp to its Oil and Acrylic tools. Per Stroke variation is available across all painting tools. That boundary is important when transferring a brush preset between media: a control visible in Brush Creator does not imply identical rendering behaviour for every wet, dry or particle-based tool.

Used sparingly, the feature can reduce the visibly repeated colour signatures produced by texture brushes. Foliage, weathered surfaces, broken pigment, terrain paintovers and hand-painted texture maps are obvious applications. The risk is equally straightforward. Large hue or brightness ranges can turn material variation into noise, particularly when a texture later drives colour-sensitive masks or material classification.

Selections stay under the cursor

The Interactive Selection Tool now includes Quick Fill. It fills the active selection with the current colour without requiring a switch to the separate Fill tool. Artists can adjust fill colour and opacity while continuing to expand, contract, feather or roughen the selection.

This is an interface and workflow change. It does not introduce a new fill algorithm, but it removes the sequence of leaving the selection tool, filling, returning and refining. Each avoided tool change saves only a few seconds, which is exactly how production overtime tends to disappear.

The new Rough Feather option produces an irregular, textured transition around the selection boundary. Standard feathering remains suitable for smooth photographic or airbrushed transitions. Rough Feather is intended for selections that must sit more naturally against canvas grain, broken watercolour edges, impasto or visibly textured brushwork.

Noise moves into Gradient Fill

Gradient Fill now applies a subtle amount of controlled noise automatically. Escape Motions says this reduces visible banding and moiré in smooth transitions, particularly across larger areas. There is no new noise amount, seed or distribution control. This is an algorithmic change rather than an expanded artist interface. The absence of another slider keeps Gradient Fill simple, but it also means artists cannot disable or tune the treatment for technically constrained deliverables.

A split grayscale interface compares two nearly identical image panels, with circular magnifying glasses enlarging details on the right side of each section. The smooth gray gradients and faint vertical banding suggest a heightmap or texture export preview, arranged in a clean, technical layout.

Impasto enters the EXR pipeline

Rebelle Pro 8.3 adds Heightmap Export to the File menu. The command writes the artwork’s impasto depth as a 16-bit OpenEXR file for use outside Rebelle. Rebelle already models raised paint and surface interaction. Version 8.3 exposes that depth information as a separate deliverable that can potentially drive displacement, bump, relief, lighting or compositing treatments in another application.

The output could be useful when a painted concept must become a dimensional material, when brush relief needs to affect a 3D render, or when compositors want to relight or exaggerate paint depth independently of the beauty image. It also provides a cleaner handoff than attempting to infer surface height from colour or luminance after export.

Heightmap Export is restricted to Rebelle Pro. Standard-edition users receive the other applicable 8.3 improvements but do not gain this output route.

Asset management catches up

Brushes, colours and papers now support multi-selection. Desktop users can use Ctrl or Command and Shift, while touch users can invoke selection with a long press. Selected assets can then be moved or reorganised as a group. Drag-and-drop behaviour has also been adjusted to make asset placement and ordering more predictable. These changes do not alter brush rendering, but they address the maintenance cost of larger custom libraries.

That becomes relevant in studio environments where artists share approved papers, brush sets or palette resources. Moving one preset at a time is tolerable during experimentation and decidedly less charming when preparing a department-wide library.

JPEG, PSD and time-lapse handling

JPEG export can now use a custom background colour. Artists can set it for an individual export or define a global default under Preferences, General and JPEG Options. This is cool, because JPEG does not preserve transparency, so an explicit background is preferable to discovering an unsuitable matte colour after delivery. We recoomend a heart-attack-green to make sure you catch every transparency, and you can Key it easily.

The 8.3 fixes include a correction for paper layers and textures exported to PSD, as well as layer-opacity and blend-mode restoration after particular merge, remove and undo sequences. Escape Motions also corrected fluid simulation visibility when a layer mask is active.

Permanent licences and temporary discounts

Rebelle 8 is sold as a perpetual, or lifetime, licence rather than a monthly subscription. A new licence includes one year of feature and maintenance updates from the purchase date, including qualifying major and minor releases issued during that entitlement period.

Rebelle 8.3 is free for all Rebelle 8 users. Escape Motions offers Standard and Pro editions for commercial use, with the EXR heightmap exporter and several advanced colour, PSD, shader and automation features reserved for Pro.
