Das Element 2.3.2: Cleaner Ingest and Reverse Playback

Das Element 2.3.2 adds reverse playback, MTL support and CPU thread controls, while fixing ingest, RAW proxies and metadata.
A dark-themed media library interface shows several video files with thumbnail previews of fire, smoke, and a gas-explosion plume. Rows list filenames, frame counts, tags, and progress details across a wide panel, with a search bar and controls along the top in a compact, technical layout.

For those who don’t know the tool: Das Element is an on-premises asset-library manager for media, VFX and 3D production, with ingest, tagging, previews and scripting/CLI integration. For background, see our earlier reports on Element 2.1 and Das Element 2.2. Version 2.3.2 is a practical maintenance update rather than a redesign.

Das Element 2.3.2, released on 7 October 2026, tackles the less glamorous but essential side of asset management: reliable ingest, usable previews and predictable metadata. The update adds reverse video playback, MTL support and CPU thread controls, alongside fixes for RAW proxies, image sequences and pipeline automation.

Ingest and processing

Image sequences containing frame gaps can now be split into separate sequences during ingest. Metadata changes can be synchronised across selected items, and category hierarchies can be generated from folder structures. Fixes address concurrent tag creation and a Windows permission error during initial ingest.

A new DASELEMENT_THREADS environment variable sets the thread count for individual CPU-heavy jobs, including FFmpeg proxy generation. By default, available CPU cores are divided by the number of workers. Proxy generation fixes cover spherical media and camera RAW files such as CR3, NEF and ARW. The developer provides no performance benchmarks.

Review, 3D and automation

The video player gains reverse playback, fullscreen (F) and mute (M) shortcuts. Das Element recommends short-GOP proxies for smoother reverse playback. Frame stepping, timeline scrubbing and short-clip filmstrips have been corrected. The update also adds MTL support, although the release notes do not specify which material properties are interpreted.

Actions can now be organised in nested subfolders; action icons can use relative paths, and an example hook file is included. The CLI receives improved quote validation and ingest logging. Gallery fixes cover searches involving spaces, underscores or hyphens, selection persistence, HDR viewer stability and refreshing additional files. Crucially for mixed-media libraries, additional files now retain their own colourspace rather than inheriting that of the main asset. New tag IDs are normalised to lowercase without spaces.
