Red Giant 2027: Relight, Noise, Schmutz

Red Giant 2027 brings AI relighting to After Effects, procedural Maxon Noise, custom lens dirt, Autograph distortion and smarter Capsules.
A digital editing workspace shows a tiger image on a dark canvas, lit with dramatic red and blue color grading. Thin white control lines and curves overlay the subject, suggesting a color or relighting effect in progress, while interface panels frame the image along the bottom and sides.

For those who don’t know the tool: Red Giant is Maxon’s family of effects and motion-graphics tools covering compositing, particles, colour, distortions and image treatments. Its plugins work across several editing and compositing hosts, but individual effects do not necessarily support every host. The October 2026 release, version 2027.0.0, adds five significant tools and workflow updates.

Red Giant 2027 is a more substantial autumn delivery than another assortment of presets in festive packaging. Scene Light offers depth-aware relighting in After Effects; Universe gets Cinema 4D’s procedural Maxon Noise; Real Lens Flares accepts animated custom grime; Chromatic Displacement moves into Autograph; and Maxon Studio Capsules can expose the specialised controls that their effects actually need. That last point sounds administrative until you’ve tried fitting a colour wheel into a row of generic sliders.

Scene Light: let there be another light

Scene Light is the main new compositing tool. It analyses footage to generate depth and surface-normal maps, then uses that information with After Effects lights to change the apparent illumination of the scene. Depth helps distinguish foreground from background, so a light can fall behind an object instead of washing uniformly across the frame. Normal information informs how illumination behaves across visible surfaces. Maxon says the AI map generation runs locally on the workstation; the notes do not describe a cloud-processing requirement.

You can place and adjust lights to change mood, match an inserted VFX element to photographed material or attempt a day-for-night treatment. A useful alternative is to feed Scene Light existing depth and normal passes from Cinema 4D, Redshift or another renderer rather than deriving them from finished images. That matters when a CG element already has reliable geometry information. This is relighting driven by estimated or supplied scene information, not a reconstruction of all the lighting and geometry behind the camera. The practical test remains whether difficult boundaries, reflections and overlapping objects hold up in motion.

Universe Maxon Noise: Cinema 4D’s patterns escape

One of the more requested features finally arrives: Universe now includes Maxon Noise, drawing on the procedural pattern library familiar to Cinema 4D artists. Maxon describes GPU acceleration and controls for scale, complexity, colour, animation speed, looping and blending. It is not just a button that adds grain. These patterns can create animated textures, displacement inputs, transition masks, particle-driver maps and abstract motion graphics.

The distinction between a procedural source and a baked animation is useful here. With Maxon Noise, designers can change structure, timing and layering inside the host instead of returning to Cinema 4D to regenerate a texture sequence. The supplied release video explicitly identifies the feature as available to Red Giant or Universe subscribers. It also suggests passing Maxon Noise into Real Lens Flares as animated Schmutz. Which brings us to a technical term the marketing team wisely resisted translating.

Real Lens Flares: bring your own Schmutz

Real Lens Flares can now take any suitable layer as a custom Schmutz texture, including animated dust, dirt, water droplets or splashes. Instead of relying entirely on preset contamination patterns, compositors can build and animate their own lens artifacts and have them interact with the flare. A procedural noise layer therefore becomes part of the optical treatment rather than merely a background texture.

New light-source models add tungsten, fluorescent, LED, HMI, sodium-vapour, fire and other behaviours to the existing repertoire. These are useful starting points for matching the apparent colour and character of practical lighting. Whether the result resembles a particular production lens and fixture still depends on the source shot and the artist’s settings. The good news is that lens dirt has officially become something we can art-direct. The less good news is that the rest of the lens may still need cleaning.

Chromatic Displacement comes to Autograph

Maxon’s compositor Autograph gains Chromatic Displacement. The effect uses the pixel values of one layer to displace another while shifting colour channels by different amounts, producing refractive or prismatic edges. Applications range from heat ripples and force fields to glass-like distortions, transitions and graphic reveals. By controlling the displacement layer, artists can choose where the deformation happens and how it moves, rather than treating chromatic fringing as a uniform overlay.

This is a host expansion for an established Red Giant effect, not a newly invented distortion algorithm. It makes the tool accessible within Autograph’s own composite, which should be particularly attractive when an existing project already lives there.

Maxon Studio: Capsules develop proper controls

Studio Capsules can package Red Giant effects into reusable, focused interfaces. In version 2027, Capsule authors can expose advanced custom user-interface elements that were previously awkward to reproduce with simple controls. The release video calls out Trapcode Particular’s gradients and over-life curves, Colorista’s colour wheels and Universe’s text editor; Maxon’s notes also mention curves, gradient controls and text editors generally.

That has a practical consequence for teams building repeatable graphics and effects packages. A Capsule can present a small number of art-directable controls without flattening the original plugin’s sophisticated editor into a forest of anonymous sliders. The author decides what should remain adjustable and what can stay behind the curtain. For less technical colleagues, it is the difference between being given a useful control panel and being handed the entire engine room.

Compatibility, fixes and the awkward details

The changelog lists host support across After Effects CC 2025 and 2026, Premiere Pro CC 2025 and 2026, DaVinci Resolve 20 and 21, Autograph 2026 and 2027, Final Cut Pro 11.x and 12.x, Motion 5.x and 6.x, Avid Media Composer 2025.x and 2026.x, Cinema 4D R26 onward and selected Unreal Engine versions. This is suite-wide compatibility, not a promise that Scene Light or every other effect operates in all those applications. For Windows GPUs Maxon specifies at least 4 GB VRAM, with NVIDIA Maxwell-generation or newer hardware, or a discrete Intel/AMD GPU supporting OpenCL.

Fixes include migration errors in Particular projects with precompositions, a Premiere Pro playback problem with Universe Bokeh, and incorrect preset application in Universe Modes. There are also known problems worth reading before installing: Scene Light’s Edge Smoothing parameter is currently broken; its spot- and point-light placement buttons may freeze non-English After Effects installations; and Depth Generator’s Render to Comp can crash After Effects on some systems. Maxon Studio can also omit a saved custom preset’s preview thumbnail. These are concrete reasons to test the tools on duplicate comps before moving a live job to the new version.

Availability and workflow

Red Giant 2027.0.0 is available as the October 2026 release. The official feature overview and release notes provide the product details and caveats; check Maxon’s current plan page for region-specific subscription pricing. DP covered the previous version in Red Giant 2026.0 and the broader Maxon autumn release in its 2027 ecosystem overview. Of the five changes, Scene Light is the most significant new shot-processing tool, while Maxon Noise and the Capsule controls have immediate value for repeatable motion-design workflows. Sophisticated effects still need judgment, but at least the controls are moving closer to the artists.
