Our friends at Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt are looking for someone who knows how audiovisual productions work and enjoys helping others discover the same. The university is recruiting an acting professor, open to all genders, for “Media Production and Production Processes” at Campus Lippstadt. If your production experience has reached the point where you regularly think, “Someone really ought to teach this,” this is your invitation.
The full-time position ideally starts on 1 September 2027 and runs until 31 August 2032, with remuneration analogous to W2 under North Rhine-Westphalia’s state remuneration regulations. Part-time employment may be granted within the applicable statutory provisions. Applications close on 30 November 2026.
Your next production challenge
The next generation of media professionals needs people who can explain how technical systems, production organisation and different departments fit together. Preferably before everybody discovers the importance of interfaces five minutes AFTER going live. HSHL wants you to bring that understanding into its English-language Media Technology degree programme, which is currently being developed.

You will teach audiovisual production and production processes, together with advanced electives building on those subjects. Teaching covers bachelor’s and master’s levels and takes place primarily in English. Knowledge of copyright and media rights management is desirable, because getting a production made and being allowed to use its contents are two conversations worth having in the same room.
Audio and video production, live television and virtual production provide practical settings for teaching modern media technologies. Your task is to help students understand, analyse and evaluate the technologies, workflows, technical systems and interfaces involved. There is a satisfying challenge here: take something you understand through years of practice, unpack it carefully, and help somebody else develop the judgement to use it. Then enjoy the questions that make you reconsider your own answer.
Help build what comes next
You will design and develop practical, application-oriented teaching. Working with colleagues, you will create new classes, develop existing degree programmes and contribute to the conception of new or related study offerings. With Media Technology still taking shape, there is room to contribute to what students learn and how they learn it.
Research is part of the position, too. You will develop a long-term research programme within your subject area, contribute ideas that stimulate innovation in companies, and help secure and deliver nationally and internationally funded third-party projects. You will also develop knowledge and research transfer, strengthening cooperation between the university, industry and other professional partners.
Academic self-governance belongs to the role: committee work and participation in university policy are included. Yes, there will be meetings. Some of them may even concern how to make things work better, which is promising territory for anyone with a production background.

Bring the experience, share the thinking
Your academic background should be in media technology, media production, film and television technology, or a comparable discipline. HSHL requires an above-average doctorate or demonstrably outstanding achievements in the field, evidenced, for example, by awards or expert assessments – look at Section 36(3) of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act; professorial appointment requirements follow Section 36 of that Act.
You need at least five years of substantial professional experience with audiovisual production processes and their technologies and systems, including at least three years outside higher education. The emphasis is on audio and video production, ideally with experience in live and virtual production environments. Bring an understanding of the whole production: the equipment, the organisation, the different disciplines and the points where they need to communicate.
Experience conceiving, delivering and developing teaching is ideal. You should be able to create academically grounded, practical and didactically convincing classes at bachelor’s and master’s levels. Demonstrated experience supervising academic theses and helping students develop research skills is desirable, alongside a service-oriented approach to working within a university.
Enjoying the act of passing on knowledge matters. HSHL is looking for the pedagogical and teaching ability appropriate to the position, including the capacity to make complex subjects understandable. Knowing the answer is useful. Helping a roomful of students understand why it is the answer is where the next challenge begins.
You should enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration, work well in a team and communicate confidently. The role calls for willingness to develop classes and study programmes, participate in interdisciplinary projects and contribute to academic self-governance. Very good English is required for teaching, research and academic exchange.

A familiar university, a different opportunity
Readers of our recent HSHL stories will recognise the university from its ProSys OSVP and Digital Locations research vacancies. Those articles explored software for virtual-production planning and the creation of digital filming locations. This position puts teaching, programme development and research leadership at the centre.
It also sits within a university where production technology has a physical home. Our earlier report on HSHL’s VFX Lab and LED-stage opening offers a look at that environment. For this vacancy, however, HSHL specifies professional production expertise rather than a particular software package. The important thing to bring is your understanding of how productions function, together with the enthusiasm to let other people in on it.

HSHL offers work that contributes directly to young people’s education and development, with opportunities to participate in university life and work alongside colleagues across research, teaching and practice. Passing on experience does not require declaring yourself a finished product. That would be an awkward position in media technology.
The advertised benefits include flexible working hours, home-office and part-time options, together with family support through suitable working-time arrangements, coaching and advice at different stages of life. Professional and personal training opportunities support your own development.
Ergonomic workstations and health-promoting activities, including an active break during working hours, are also part of the package. Across its two campuses, HSHL offers modern facilities, good public-transport connections, free parking with electric-vehicle charging points and a canteen at each campus. Your students may bring difficult questions; lunch at least has an established workflow.
The HSHL contract and the longer view
The appointment is an acting professorship, fixed until 31 August 2032. If the Media Technology programme becomes successfully established, HSHL intends to advertise the professorship as a permanent position. That is a conditional plan for a later recruitment process, rather than a promised automatic conversion of this contract.
HSHL explicitly encourages appropriately qualified women to apply as part of its aim to increase the proportion of women in teaching and research. It supports professors and their families through individual measures when settling in the region and combining family and professional life. Openness to gender-related issues is expected. Applicants with severe disabilities receive priority where suitability is equal.
Apply by 30 November 2026
If you would enjoy a new challenge, help shape a developing degree programme and give the next generation a useful head start, read the full vacancy and apply through HSHL’s online portal by 30 November 2026. Based on the success of the bachelor program „Media Technology“ this position will be advertised as a permanent W2 full-time role.
Bring the knowledge you have accumulated, the questions you still enjoy asking and the pleasure of watching somebody else work something out. That last part is a fairly good reason to turn up.
Interviews are provisionally planned for calendar week 5, 2027 at Campus Lippstadt.
