Alias|Wavefront released the final Mental Ray for Maya 1.5 plug-in for Windows, IRIX and Linux, alongside a free public beta for Mac OS X. Alias|Wavefront and Maya were later acquired by Autodesk.
The integrated renderer allowed Maya artists to use Mental Ray directly inside Maya 4.5. Several thousand users had tested the Windows, IRIX and Linux public beta since October 2002.
Users of the earlier public beta were advised to uninstall it and replace it with the commercial build before the beta licence expired. Mac OS X users could test the beta ahead of a planned commercial release.
Mental Ray for Maya had previously been sold for €5,300. Version 1.5 was made available without additional charge to Maya Complete 4.5 and Maya Unlimited 4.5 customers.
