The number of planned lectures at this year’s Siggraph, which opened its doors yesterday, Sunday, has once again risen considerably compared with the previous year. The number of registered visitors (slightly more than 25,000 interested people) and exhibitors (229), by contrast, remained constant compared with the previous year, the organiser reports. In total, visitors from 75 countries are expected.
Siggraph has meanwhile become the conference par excellence for computer graphics and interactive technologies and takes place annually in an American city, preferably in Los Angeles – Siggraph 2004 also took place in the Convention Center there.
One of the major Siggraph topics this year is the optimal use of the GPU, that is, the graphics processor, whose computing power has long surpassed that of many a CPU. One lecture, for example, deals exclusively with the programming of mobile GPUs, such as those used in mobile phones, among other things.
“Star Wars” creator George Lucas has been invited as the keynote speaker and will report, among other things, on “Episode III” and his visions for the film industry.
