The Siggraph course “Line Drawings From 3D Models” dealt with non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) and the generation of a cartoon-like image from 3D models. The results could even be integrated into a viewer that can display 3D models in real time as a pencil drawing.

The particular difficulty in this conversion lies in obtaining not only the outlines of an object, but also the form-giving lines (Suggested Curves) that give the object a little more profile and can only be seen from certain viewing angles. This lecture covered the mathematics required for this and several different calculation methods.

A demo of the real-time 2D viewer with a few examples and some of the lectures will be available from next week in the download area at http://www.greensky.tv.
