The organizers of the Bitfilm Festival for digital film report strong participation: According to their figures, around
15 percent more films have already been submitted than in the previous year, even though the deadline for one of the eight competitions has not yet expired. To date, filmmakers from 48 countries have submitted 820 computer-generated 3D animations, digital FX films, Flash Movies, Machinima Movies, real-time demos, Micromovies and Ringtoons for mobile phones.
“Most of the submissions naturally come from the classic digital-film countries such as the USA, Great Britain, France and Germany,” explains festival director Aaron Koenig. “But we have also received a lot of exciting films from Egypt and Iran, Ukraine and Slovenia, Thailand and Sri Lanka, Colombia and Venezuela. The digital film revolution is wonderfully global: The tools are affordable and the Internet gives
every creative person the chance to show their work worldwide.”
After guest appearances in Bologna, Paris, Barcelona, Stuttgart and Munich, the Bitfilm team is now working on the program for its “flagship festival,” which takes place from November 2 to 6 at Hamburg’s Mandarin-Kasino on the Reeperbahn. The event is sponsored by graphics card manufacturer ATI and the Hamburg Authority for Economic Affairs and Laborsponsored. “The fact that Germany’s leading digital-film festival comes from Hamburg certainly helps carry our city’s reputation as an innovative media location out into the world,” speculates Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs Gunnar Uldall.
