Hewlett-Packard will demonstrate its broadband and media portfolio at the Con4 trade fair for digital media and entertainment in Cologne (27. to 29.9.2005). At trade fair stand D1, HP intends to present comprehensive solutions and services for all aspects of Digital Content, from creation through distribution, management and protection to the use of digital content. For this purpose, the company has divided its trade fair appearance into the areas “Create,” “Manage,” “Distribute” and “Enjoy.”

The “Create” area includes the HP Utility Rendering Service, which is intended to make high-performance rendering accessible to filmmakers, smaller production companies or game developers as well. PDI/Dreamworks used the service for the production of “Madagascar.” Only the performance actually used is paid for. HP is also presenting the SE3D project at the trade fair – a competition conducted in Great Britain among 3D animation filmmakers. The winners received the opportunity to realize 3D film projects at HP Labs with the help of the Utility Rendering Service.

Under the term “Manage,” HP groups together solutions for storing and managing digital content, including the management of metadata and customer-specific workflows. In this context, the manufacturer promotes its Digital Media Platform, a comprehensive, standards-based system that is also intended to guarantee easy connection to content-relevant solutions such as DRM software.

HP’s Media Storage is intended to serve television and radio broadcasters, providers of digital content and telecommunications companies as a scalable storage solution that takes their specific requirements into account, ensures high performance and allows the automated distribution of digital files among different storage classes as well as their management.

In the “Distribute” topic area, HP is showing a standards-based video-over-IP platform for pay-TV providers. It is intended to allow them to offer their viewers special services such as live broadcasts or Video on Demand that are “broadcast” over an IP-based network. Management of IPTV production is handled by HP’s Digital Media Platform. A demo at the trade fair shows how content is fed in, how rules for access to content can be defined and which billing models are available to providers.

Under the motto “Enjoy,” HP is presenting the “Visual Radio” service at Con4. This service, developed and offered jointly with Nokia, enables interaction between FM radio programs and their listeners: The latter can retrieve additional information on Nokia mobile phones in parallel with the radio program. For example, information and images about the song currently being played can be displayed on the mobile phone. Alternatively, the listener can also download the track to the MP3 player integrated into the mobile phone or order the corresponding CD.
