For this year’s fifth edition of their “Going Underground” short-film festival, organizers Intefilm and Berliner Fenster GmbH had to review a total of around 460 submissions from nearly 40 countries. The 14 selected productions in the “normal” competition include “Gambare Saburou” by Hans Jürgen Sodeikat and “Abstract Art” by Stephan Goll. Both are studying at the German Film School, currently in their third and fifth semesters respectively. While in Sodeikat’s “Gambare Saburou” a Zen monk takes aim at splitting a wooden table in accordance with karate, the gallery visitor in “Abstract Art” has to deal with the pitfalls of a modern art object.
The annual “Going Undergorund” short-film festival is once again taking place in the run-up to the Berlinale. A total of 21 short films can be seen from February 1 to 7 exclusively on the monitors of the Berlin subway. The passengers act as the jury. They vote by mobile phnoe or SMS on who receives the six prizes amounting to 10,750 euros.
After the German Film School won 3rd place, endowed with 1,000 euros, last year with the 3D animation “Roger the Cat,” students, faculty and staff of Germany’s only private film university are hoping for a prize this year as well.
