SIGGRAPH: Fast Forward Previews Papers

Presenters had 60 seconds each to introduce their work during SIGGRAPH’s rapid paper preview.

The Fast Forward Papers Preview was among the most popular events at the start of SIGGRAPH. Several thousand participants attended the orientation session for the conference programme, with its principal focus on technical papers. Each presenter had exactly one minute to introduce themselves or their work.

The format gave visitors a quick indication of how the developments might be used. A title such as Recursive Wang Tiles for Real-Time Blue Noise reveals little at first glance about applications in non-photorealistic rendering or painting, which is precisely why the preview session exists.

Some presentations were restrained, while others used the minute aggressively. One speaker appeared in a T-shirt reading, “I am looking for Job. Please ask me for my CV.”

A technical highlight was Spectral Surface Quadrangulation, which demonstrated how to unfold an optimal mesh for a 3D cat by striking it with a virtual hammer.

Near the end of the session, the presenter of Video Abstraction delivered the paper preview in the style of a vitamin-pill advertisement.
