Under the title “SmoothSketch: 3D free-form shapes from complex sketches,” doctoral student Olga Karpenko and her doctoral supervisor Prof. John F. Hughes presented a solution that can calculate complex 3D objects from a hand-drawn sketch. What is special about it is that the technique also calculates the curves for concealed areas.
The aim, then, is to create an interface that can create the drawn object in 3D using only outlines as a template. A few outline lines from one view are sufficient input for the program to create a three-dimensional body from them.
The technique used consists of the virtual completion of the drawn outlines and an analysis of the intersections. By adding new outlines to the 3D object created from one view, the shape can be expanded further. The current development status of this technique even allows objects with holes to be designed.
