DreamWorks Animation plans to produce all of its films for stereoscopic 3D projection from 2009. The studio intends to account for three-dimensional projection from the start of design and development instead of converting completed films afterwards.
DreamWorks chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said 3D had historically been treated as an additional feature and had not shown audiences the technology’s full potential. He said the studio would use current stereoscopic technology to design films from the ground up, creating new options for artists and a different viewing experience.
DreamWorks expected several thousand screens worldwide to support 3D projection by 2009. Its first production under the plan, carrying the working title “Monsters vs. Aliens”, was scheduled for summer 2009.
