Silverlight 1.0 is Microsoft’s answer to Adobe Flash. It is intended to run in different browsers on different platforms and form the basis for distributing next-generation content, so-called “Rich Interactive Applications” (RIA).
Initially, Silverlight 1.0 is available only for Windows and MacOS X with the Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari web browsers . However, Microsoft announced that it would develop a Linux version of Silverlight together with Novell.
Together with Silverlight 1.0, Microsoft also released Expression Media Encoder 1.0. The software can be used to encode videos for Silverlight.
Microsoft has set up its own community website for Silverlight, where the software can also be downloaded.
