Filming of the new cinema feature film “The Story of Brandner Kaspar” began in Munich and the surrounding area on October 8 under the direction of Joseph Vilsmaier. “Brandner Kaspar” ranks among the most popular Bavarian folk plays and tells with much humor and numerous fantasy elements the story of a Tegernsee gunsmith who outwits death, “Boandlkramer” in Bavarian, and wins numerous further years of life from him at cards. Based on a story by Franz von Kobell, the material has enjoyed enormous popularity for decades and has already served as the basis for several successful stage adaptations as well as two classic film adaptations.
The role of Brandner Kaspar is taken by the Bavarian author and actor Franz Xaver Kroetz (“Wildwechsel”, “Kir Royal”), the part of Boandlkramer by Germany’s film multitalent Michael Bully Herbig. Otherwise too, the production has a top-class cast with Sebastian Bezzel, Peter Ketnath, Lisa Potthof, Alexander Held, Jörg Hube, Elisabeth Trissenaar as well as Detlev Buck. Herbert Kloiber and Markus Zimmer are responsible as producers for Clasart Film and Television Production, as is Joseph Vilsmaier for Perathon Film. The production is supported with funds from FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, the German Federal Film Fund, the FFA as well as Cinetirol.
“Brandner Kaspar” will be released in cinemas nationwide by Concorde Film Distribution in November 2008 and afterwards exploited by Concorde Home Entertainment.
