After the world premiere at the Berlinale in February 2007 was praised hymnicly by press and public and the DVDs sold brilliantly internationally, a book edition appeared from KW Institute for Contemporary Art and Schirmer/Mosel Verlag that, in addition to essays and hundreds of color photos, contains a reprint of the screenplay. This book is now available in an English edition.
At the center of the restoration was original cinematographer Xaver Schwarzenberger. Together with all available members of the technical staff from the time it was made and with the help of the latest technology, Fassbinder’s main cinematic work was saved for posterity: The quality of the still surviving 16-mm prints was desastrous, and the decay would have progressed if the rescue had not now been carried out in a feat of strength that was financially co-supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
