Microsoft, which dominates the PC market worldwide with the Windows operating system, had released the new Vista operating system in January. At the start of deliveries of «Leopard», Apple had a sharply increased US market share of 8.1 percent, as the company had made a brilliant comeback with its PCs. Worldwide, the share was well above the critical threshold

of three percent.

The delivery of the new operating-system version proved unusually difficult by Apple standards. Because Apple CEO Steve Jobs assigned all available developer capacity to programming the iPhone mobile phone last year, «Leopard» reached the market four months late. Apple touts «more than 300 improvements» in the new system and emphasizes, with a dig at competitor Microsoft, that all «Leopard» buyers would get the «Ultimate» version for 129 euros. Microsoft offers its new Windows Vista system in different versions, with the «Ultimate» variant able to cost up to 500 euros.

Among the many new features of the Mac system «Leopard», the «Time Machine» data-backup solution stands out above all. It not only permanently creates backup copies of the data on an external drive, but makes it possible to track down files thought lost again in a particularly simple way.
