RTT Builds BMW Welt 3D Configurator

RTT’s BMW Welt configurator presents 17 vehicles and 300,000 combinations in real time on an 8.8-megapixel projection wall.

RTT built a real-time 3D visualization system for configuring 17 BMW models at BMW Welt. Visitors could choose from around 300,000 combinations of paint, wheels and interior equipment, then inspect the configured vehicle from any camera angle without waiting for a new render.

Data preparation and software

Around 200 GB of raw data was processed to create photorealistic versions of the vehicles. The completed visualizations for all 17 cars occupied 17 GB.

The BMW Design Configurator ran on RTT Powerwall, the cluster implementation of RTT DeltaGen and RTT DeltaView. DeltaGen prepared complex 3D geometry for high-end real-time visualization, including geometry processing, visual effects and placement in realistic environments.

The installation could also play PowerPoint presentations and DVDs with sound, allowing it to operate as a general presentation platform.

Projection and hardware

RTT installed the system with ICT, Videocation and MKT. Visitors controlled it through a touchscreen and trackball. The model appeared on an 8.8-megapixel rear-projection wall with optical redirection.

The projection system used a Sony SXRD 4K projector. A Fujitsu Siemens R640 system provided five banks of 16 GB RAM and five NVIDIA FX 5600 G80 graphics cards. An uninterruptible power supply protected the installation.
