Regarding his decision, Claus Kleber said that the offer from SPIEGEL was a great honour: “I believe I am capable of the task and have carefully weighed my decision. In the end stands the conviction: Television is my medium. So it is not a decision against the most important print magazine, but for the best TV magazine. With the ‘heute-journal’, with our news broadcasts on ZDF, we stand at the threshold of the digital age. In one year, we will broadcast with the latest technology from Europe’s most modern news studio. The information society will change, an incredibly exciting process. I want to shape it together with my team.”
ZDF editor-in-chief Nikolaus Brender said in Mainz: “I brought Claus Kleber from ARD in 2003, why should I let him go to SPIEGEL now. We have agreed that the ZDF news magazine ‘heute-journal’ will be energetically expanded as a top format.”
