The ZDF two-part drama Die Gustloff examines the sinking of the ship of the same name, carrying more than 9,000 people, after it was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine on 30 January 1945.
For the multimillion-euro production directed by Joseph Vilsmaier, Exozet Effects created two visual-effects shots, including a dramatic flood of water into the ship’s interior.
The sequence was filmed using a 1:5-scale model, with water and debris enhanced digitally. Alongside the water work, Exozet’s VFX specialists combined model and live-action footage using greenscreen compositing.
The second part of the refugee drama will be broadcast on ZDF this evening at 20:15.
