Munich Gaming – media and games industries in dialogue: April 5–8, 2008

At the opening of the “Munich Gaming” specialist congress on April 7, participants from politics, industry and design will set out their fundamental positions: the opening speech by Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Günther Beckstein – who tends to take a critical view of games – will be followed by an introduction by Olaf Wolters, Managing Director of the Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (BIU).

Following his account of the gaming industry’s importance to Germany as a business location, “Black & White” creator Peter Molyneux will explain the international perspective from a developer’s point of view in his keynote.

At the Gaming Summit on April 8, representatives of the gaming and media industries will then meet to discuss opportunities and barriers in the German games market. Youth protection advocates such as Elke Monssen-Engberding and Prof. Dr. Wolf-Dieter Ring will meet media experts Dr. Marcus Englert and Christiane zu Salm and leading figures in the German games industry such as Jens Hilgers, Peter Mucha and Dr. Klemens Kundratitz.

The role of online or mobile games in the market, the developments to be expected from the different consoles, how advertising can address the broad target group of “gamers” and what financing models for games might look like – these and many other subjects will be explored in 23 further workshops on April 7 and 8.

The show stage at the centre of the public event on April 5 and 6 on Munich’s Praterinsel will focus on practical aspects of games.

In conversation with Wolfram Hilpert of the BPjM, Heidi Wahl, editor at Focus Schule, will give tips on the responsible use of computer and video games. Lea Niggemann, who has developed a parents’ guide to “World of Warcraft”, will introduce the role-playing genre, and editors from GameStar magazine will present sports and shooter games.

In a discussion with psychologist Klaus Wölfling and Christoph Hirte of the parents’ initiative “Rollenspielsucht”, TV presenter Alexandra Polzin will examine risk factors that excessive consumption of role-playing games can involve.

Admission to the event on Praterinsel is free following online registration.
