Digital Biter: Report on the Nosferatu Restoration Now in the Current Issue of DIGITAL PRODUCTION

“Nosferatu” (1921), a classic of German silent cinema, also underwent extensive digital restoration last year, following its analogue restoration in 2005/2006.

Between the decision by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation as rights holder and Transit Film as rights exploiter to have this masterpiece processed, and the eventual result delivered by technical service provider Omnimago GmbH, lay a long process that required considerable personnel and financial resources. When the processed version is then broadcast on television or the film appears on DVD, the “end consumer” can often scarcely imagine the effort involved in such comprehensive digital processing, which can sometimes take several months.
