The completely new NVIDIA Tegra is only the size of a ten-cent coin, consumes little power, and is therefore exceptionally well suited to mobile computing devices.
The NVIDIA Tegra 650 is the second product in the Tegra family. The first is the NVIDIA Tegra APX 2500 application processor for the latest generation of Windows mobile phones. The first mobile devices equipped with NVIDIA Tegra 650 are expected to become available by the end of the year.
The most important feature of the NVIDIA Tegra 650 is a heterogeneous processor architecture with multiple processors, each suited to a specific class of tasks: an 800 MHz ARM CPU, an HD video processor, an imaging processor, an audio processor, and an exceptionally energy-efficient GeForce GPU. These processors can operate together or independently, enabling impressive visual experiences while consuming minimal energy. With this heterogeneous, energy-efficient processor architecture, NVIDIA achieves efficiency up to ten times better than currently available battery-powered products offering similar visual computing experiences.
“As more consumers use the internet on the move with smartphones and MIDs, device manufacturers face a growing challenge in delivering image quality on mobile systems comparable to desktop devices,” said ARM CEO Warren East. “Equipped with state-of-the-art ARM technology and a groundbreaking combination of performance, power consumption, and form factor, the NVIDIA Tegra mobile computer-on-a-chip meets these requirements far better than any other solution currently available and represents a major step toward the mobile internet.”
