Virtual Experience has entered into a partnership with the French company Volfoni. This makes it possible to provide active 3D glasses to digital cinemas that have not yet installed a 3D option.
The technology used is from Nuvision/Xpand. This allows 2D digital cinemas to screen individual films offered in 3D in that format. Around the turn of the year, 3D titles in distribution programs include “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”
In France, this model has already been used successfully for the 3D releases of “U2-3D,” “Beowulf” and, recently, “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” For the latter film, 32 prints were shown in digital 3D and 331 prints on 35 mm.
After seven weeks, the 3D cinemas, with just under 10 percent of the prints, accounted for 37 percent of the box office. In other words, the 3D prints earned an average of four to five times as much as the 2D prints.
