AMD introduced a beta version of a 3D browser for managing multimedia content on a PC. Fusion Multimedia Explorer also links video, photographs, and music with social networks, AMD Product Manager Casey Gotcher explained in a blog post. Facebook, Flickr, and YouTube are integrated into the application, allowing content uploads with a few clicks.
The application presents files stored on the computer in a three-dimensional view with small previews. Users can browse their collection and play content directly in Fusion Multimedia Explorer. An expanded menu provides web connections. Drag and drop uploads content from the computer to a Web 2.0 platform, and Gotcher said transfers in the opposite direction were similarly straightforward. Music is another focus: Live DJ suggests similar songs for a selected track.
“Fusion Multimedia Explorer creates a connection between photos, video, music, television, and the web,” AMD said. Gotcher described the application as combining the multimedia capabilities of an AMD laptop or desktop in one program. No information was available about whether it would work on Intel-based computers. Since acquiring ATI, AMD had been working to improve the graphics capabilities of its chips while criticizing Intel’s graphics performance.
A preview version of Fusion Multimedia Explorer was available for download from AMD’s website. Installation required a sufficiently powerful computer running Windows Vista or Windows 7. Older Microsoft operating systems and Linux were not supported.
