CLIPSTER Gives Ludwig Kameraverleih and soundLab the Fastest RED Workflow

Ludwig Kameraverleih and sister company soundLab Postproduktion in Munich are the first German companies to implement their RED workflow with CLIPSTER. The DVS DI workstation processes high-resolution 4K RED data in real time, enabling very fast and flexible RED workflows for television and film customers.

Using CLIPSTER allows soundLab Postproduktion GmbH, a sister company of Ludwig Kameraverleih, to run its RED workflow at full 4K resolution in real time. The company and its customers benefit from a file-based workflow without copying or waiting times.

Ludwig Kameraverleih uses RED data in television production, among other areas. CLIPSTER operates as a digital film laboratory and processes RED RAW data in real time, ten times faster than before. On set, RED data is transferred to CLIPSTER via USB and can immediately be viewed and quality-checked at full RGB 4:4:4 12-bit quality. Dailies with extensive burn-ins are generated in real time as DNxHD 220 Mbit/s 10-bit 4:4:4, saving substantial time. Another advantage is that soundLab Postproduktion can generate high-quality broadcast material directly from the raw footage.

Completed television projects can be recorded directly from CLIPSTER to HDCAM SR. All RED camera parameters can also be changed conveniently in CLIPSTER® afterward and in real time. Additional colour correction enables users to create the best film look in real time. CLIPSTER® therefore complements the existing infrastructure at Ludwig Kameraverleih and soundLab Postproduktion optimally. The new RED workflow provides immediate quality control, genuine RGB 4:4:4 at 12 bits without reduced resolution, and greatly accelerated processes.

Film customers likewise gain maximum flexibility and speed. The edit list created during offline editing (ALE/XML) is transferred to CLIPSTER®. The CLIPSTER® conforming tool then performs online conforming of RAW data directly on the system. Split-screen display allows editors to compare 4K RAW 12-bit material with the offline edit. CLIPSTER generates the DPX files required for subsequent colour correction at high speed, while both primary colour correction and scaling occur in real time.

soundLab Postproduktion Managing Director Claudia Vonend says: “We are enthusiastic about the new RED workflow. CLIPSTER® closes a major gap in television production because switching to RED is now even more attractive for our customers. Creating dailies previously took as long as an entire night; we now do it in real time directly on set. We save time and costs and can perform immediate quality control.”

Michael Bauer, DVS Sales Director Central Europe, says: “Ludwig Kameraverleih and soundLab Postproduktion are the first companies in Germany able to offer customers a complete real-time RED workflow. We are delighted that our CLIPSTER® DI workstation is making an important contribution to this success.”
