Nvidia subsidiary Mental Images has announced iray, the first fully GPU-accelerated rendering solution for 3D graphics applications. It uses the massively parallel computing power of the graphics processing unit (GPU) to enable artists and developers to generate 3D graphics quickly and easily in photorealistic display quality. “With iray rendering technology, artists and CAD users can now create visual effects within minutes without compromising the quality or level of detail of the visualization,” emphasizes Dr. Jon Peddie, President of Jon Peddie Research.
By integrating iray into Mental Images’ mental ray technology, millions of users can now create synthetic images in a previously unknown way during rendering, which is used, among other things, in film production and in market-leading design tools from Autodesk, Dassault Systèmes or Parametric Technology. “It is no secret that users want to use the computing power of GPUs for photorealistic rendering,” emphasizes Rolf Herken, CEO and CTO of Mental Images. “With iray, we offer not only a solution that uses the power of the GPU efficiently, but also a technology that redefines photorealism in rendering.”
The iray rendering technology is part of mental ray 3.8, which will be available from the end of November 2009 at no additional cost to existing customers and OEMs. The iray technology will also be available as part of RealityServer 2.4, the upcoming release of the 3D Web Application Services software. The planned iray Integrator Edition is intended to enable independent software vendors to integrate iray technology into their own products, and the upcoming integration into the NVIDIA SceniX Scene Management Engine will make iray technology accessible to all SceniX-based applications, Nvidia says.
