Nintendo secured a coveted distinction at that day’s presentation of the German Children’s Software Award TOMMI 2009 at the Frankfurt Book Fair: the award for best console game went to Wii Sports Resort. The children’s jury explained the award for the innovative sports programme as follows: “Wii Sports Resort wins because we liked the graphics, animation and the idea of moving around. We think sport and exercise are better than just sitting quietly in front of a device. There was an incredibly large number of different sports that we had never done before in our lives and could now try.”
Every year, a jury of journalists, media educators and children presents the renowned TOMMI Awards to innovative and outstanding children’s software. They are intended to strengthen children’s media literacy, publicise good computer and console games, and give parents guidance in the games jungle. The award was initiated by the magazine for parents and children “spielen und lernen” and Berlin’s FEIBEL.DE children’s media office. In 2009 it was supported by Stiftung Lesen, ZDF tivi, the Frankfurt Book Fair and the German Library Association, among others.
“One of the special features of the TOMMI Awards is that the jury includes children in its work,” says Silja Gülicher, Head of Press at Nintendo Germany, who accepted the award that day. “That is why we attach particularly high value to Wii Sports Resort’s distinction. We especially support the initiators’ goal of teaching children to use media critically and responsibly.”
