Press release from FMX:
Stuttgart/Ludwigsburg, January 24, 2011. Preparations for FMX 2011 are in full swing: as always, Europe’s most important conference for animation, effects, games and interactive media offers four exciting days at the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart at the beginning of May, with high-calibre talks, presentations and workshops, as well as plenty of opportunity for networking.
Jean-Michel Blottière, Program Chair of FMX 2011, on the 16th edition of the conference:
“From May 3 to 6, FMX again presents the extraordinary creativity of the digital industry and a broad spectrum of exciting topics. These include technical developments such as previz and editing in 3D or the influence of open-source software on the industry, but also new trends in lighting and the increasing importance of interactive technologies. And we promise a whole series of new animated films, new visual effects, new games and further surprises.”
Topics for 2011
Tron and Tron: Legacy
Steven Lisberger’s 1982 science-fiction classic Tron has inspired and shaped an entire generation of filmmakers and animators. Bill Kroyer, award-winning Director of Animation and Computer Graphics and responsible for Computer Image Choreography on Tron, recalls how the film could be realised technically almost 30 years ago.
And naturally, with support from Digital Domain, FMX presents a special feature on Tron: Legacy. The film is already on the shortlist for the forthcoming Academy Awards and is also nominated for the 9th VES Awards, which will be presented in Los Angeles at the beginning of February.
Global Production
Global production has changed the industry permanently. Worldwide workflow, decentralised working processes, international financing and transmedia exploitation are becoming increasingly important. The complexity of new productions is increasing more and more. Eric Roth, Executive Director of the Visual Effects Society and host of this year’s Global Production track, discusses the effects of this process of change with experts from the film, TV, games and social-media industries and also examines the role of the rapidly growing industry in Asia.
Open Source
Open-source software is changing our user behaviour in numerous areas. Software expert Dan Candela, Director of Technology at Walt Disney Animation Studios, devotes his track to the question of how the current CG landscape is influenced by open-source technology.
18th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS)
From May 3 to 8, 2011, Stuttgart will again become the centre of international animated film, as for the 18th time ITFS invites directors, production companies, distributors and world sales companies to present their animated films. Alongside the promising ITFS screenings within FMX, the animated-film festival offers conference visitors the opportunity to end the day at the cinema in the evening.
Animation Production Day 2011 (APD)
Animation Production Day is a business platform for the international animation industry, specialising in theatrical feature films, series, games and mobile content, with a particular focus on brand potential, marketing and financing. It will take place on May 3 and 4 in parallel with FMX 2011 at the Haus der Wirtschaft.
