Presented at Siggraph: Motion Capture Using Body Cameras

Researchers from Disney and Carnegie Mellon University presented an alternative to conventional motion-capture systems at this year’s Siggraph. Small cameras (around 20) attached to the performer’s body make it possible to derive movements of the body and limbs in the environment.

Without a greenscreen and studio settings with markers at fixed camera positions, the new system makes it possible to record movement sequences outdoors.

This would be a low-cost alternative to the elaborate setups with space problems in the studio. An affordable motion-capture system for everyone is the declared goal of the research team.
