After 15 film talents were still allowed to hope for this year’s VFX Oscar in mid-December, "Sucker Punch", "Cowboys & Aliens", "Super 8", "Sherlock Holmes" and "Thor" have now had to bury those hopes again.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the remaining ten candidates, from each of which the Oscar jury will now be shown a 10-minute excerpt over the next few days. The five films finally nominated for the 84th Academy Awards will be announced live at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater on January 25.
The ten VFX films entering the race fro the nomination are: "Captain America", the final part of the "Harry Potter" series, Scorsese’s new film "Hugo", "Mission Impossible 4", "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides", "Real Steel", "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", "Transformers: Dark of the Moon", "X-Men: First Class" and, as the only arthouse film, "Tree of Life" has made the selection.
The jury will certainly not find the choice easy with this concentrated VFX quality of each individual film…
