All works created with VFX at an accredited school can be submitted for the VES Student Award. The ceremony takes place in Beverly Hills, California, on February 5, 2013. Competition winners receive a return flight to California, a two-night stay to attend the show and a licence for the Autodesk Maya Entertainment Creation Suite, because Autodesk supports and sponsors the VES Award.

Here is another look back: In 2010, for example, "Motherland" by Hannes Appell from Filmakademie Ludwigsburg was nominated for the VES Student Award.

In 2012, a work from Filmakademie Ludwigsburg even won the coveted VES Award in the category "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Student Project": the FMX trailer "a.maize".
