The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) established this in its annual market report. Worldwide cinema revenue totalled 34.7 billion US dollars in 2012, six percent higher than the previous year.
Revenue in the USA and Canada rose by six percent, while in Europe it fell by one percent compared with 2011. Europe accounts for ten percent of global revenue in total. According to the 2012 cinema revenue figures published by the German Federal Film Board, Germany is the seventh-largest cinema market worldwide.
The films that earned the most money in the USA and Canada in 2012 were "Marvel’s The Avengers" in first place, followed by "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Hunger Games".
One reason for increasing profits despite fewer cinema visitors is higher ticket prices, justified by 3D, HFR or other cinema specials, for example. "Die Welt" reported some time ago on cinema operators’ clever marketing tricks.
