According to The Foundry, Mari can be used to paint high-resolution textures with millions of polygons directly onto a 3D model. Mac owners can currently familiarize themselves with Mari 2.5 using a 15-day trial version. Until October 31, The Foundry is offering Mari 25 percent cheaper for all platforms. With this discount, Mari costs 1,085 euros.

The main addition in the release of the second full version of Mari was the feature of a new layer system. This is intended to make the painting tool easier to use than before and, above all, make the workflow feel familiar to Photoshop users.

Mari was originally developed at Weta Digital for James Cameron’s "Avatar". In 2010, The Foundry took over the tool and released the first full version in July 2010.

For true Mari artists who want to compete with other artists in a texturing competition, entries can be submitted until December 15. And the prizes are impressive: Nuke, Mari or Modo, among other things, can be won. You can find more about The Foundry’s CGChallenge here.
