The two indie packages are available at considerably lower prices – the permanent licence for Modo for 209 euros and for Mari for 104 euros – but are not supposed to contain any commercial restrictions for indie artists. For anyone who would like to test both tools, there is also a bundle for 264 euros or subscription options starting at one month for a fee of around 8 euros per month.

Modo Indie

The two indie versions will replace the Steam Editions and, according to previous user feedback, are intended to have considerably more features and improvements than before. In addition to 3D modelling, sculpting, animation, and rigging tools, Modo Indie features include the texture-baking function, which allows models to be prepared quickly for export. Indie Modo is also intended to have high-performance rendering, and OBJ and FBX files can be exported easily to game engines.

Mari Indie

Mari is also intended to offer everything for the CG painting workflow: Textures can be applied intuitively to 3D models with Mari, and personal favourite Photoshop brushes can also be imported into Mari. The optimised layer-based workflow enables greater control and more speed when working with Mari. The interactive preview is also intended to work in Mari Indie, as are Alembic support and physically based shading and environment lighting.

Here you can purchase Modo Indie and Mari Indie on Steam.

Until tomorrow, The Foundry is also holding a flash sale in which the commercial versions of Modo and Mari are being offered at discounts of up to 40 percent.
