Arrival

by Bahadir Özbek & Marvin Philipp/Nookta from Germany

The Nookta team was only able to take all the liberties they wanted with “Arrival”, from conception to post-production, because it was not a commissioned work for a client, but a self-assigned task.

Bahadir Özbek and Marvin Philipp worked on the visualisation for four weeks with brief interruptions: As trained architects, they were inspired by the icons of Californian modernism, architects such as Richard Neutra and Pierre König. Using Sketchup 2015, they developed the 3D model from set pieces of modern villas; a house that does not exist in this form in reality.

They did not model all the details themselves; some objects were sourced from Turbosquid, the plants from XFrog Plants and some furniture as 3D models from the manufacturers. Through many mood tests, they were able to determine the most convincing lighting settings, followed by rendering with V-Ray. The storytelling of “Arrival”, for which the figures and the background were used, was done at the very end in post-production with Photoshop.

“Film” Special Architecture Prize of the Detail

Spatial Bodies

by Stefan Larsson/Aujik from Japan

A DJI Phantom 3 drone, HDR photos and Google Earth images provided the real images for the 360-degree panoramic ride 100 metres above Osaka. It took Larrson four months to bring his utopia to life. The motion tracking alone took two weeks using the SynthEyes programme: this involved adding a 3D grid to the selection of important buildings on the skyline that were intended for further processing. The artist used 3ds Max for the 3D modelling, V-Ray 2.0 for the rendering, Magic Bullet Suite for the colour matching and Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop for the post-production.
