Eighteen months of work, numerous references, facial tracking, and a great deal of care resulted in an outcome in which nobody who did not already know it immediately notices when watching “Rogue One” that a CG character is acting there rather than a real performer.
Star Wars VIII
Before her sudden death, Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher was still able to approve ILM’s work for “Rogue One”. “Star Wars: Episode VIII” with her, which will open in December 2017, was also still able to complete filming. But perhaps ILM will have to tackle the full-CG recreation again for a few reshoot scenes? If so, we probably would not notice immediately.
