Displacement Mapping
The easiest way to convert digital images into 3D models is to use the displacement mapping technique. To do this, first import the textured photo into Cinema 4D and then export the height data. You can find high-quality, free images at Textures.com. Displacement mapping works by editing the spatial values of the 3D model based on the pixel values of the image texture. It is best to note down one or more reference heights at the beginning so that you retain an overview. Another tip: start from the lowest point and work your way upwards. This avoids time-consuming readjustment of the edges in the form of cuts or restrictors. Ewan Davidson renders the finished displacement in Octane.
Pause 2017 Opening Titels
Artist Xiaolin Zeng used displacements in the 2017 Opening Titels for the Pause Festival in Australia. This not only put him on the current DP cover 01 :18, but also secured him an animago AWARD nomination last year in the “Best Motion Design” category.
