Whether USD, OpenSubdiv or OpenColorIO: Open-source standards are playing an increasingly important role in the VFX industry. Autodesk has now released a new presentation panel discussing the work on Material X together with LucasFilm and Allegorithmic.

MaterialX is an open standard specification and API for describing and transferring material and look-development content between different DCC tools or renderers. This includes, among other things….
- Shading Network Topology
- Complex materials with multiple rendering targets
- Texture and material assignments
- and more
The format has so far been used in various Industrial Light & Magic projects, such as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” You can find a summary of the current state of development in this SIGGRAPH 2019 PDF slide.
